Schor Conservation Area

The Schor Conservation Area has 2.5 miles of trail.

Description
The Schor Conservation Area consists of 233 acres located in the community of Red Rock (Canaan). The main trail (green) loops past a small pond before entering an upland forest.  A steep climb through hemlock slopes (Red Trail) reveals a scenic overlook of the Hudson Valley to the Catskill Mountains. The rolling pastures were formerly used for the grazing of Highland cattle, and now support dairy cows and beef cattle from local farmers.

The Schor Conservation Area was made possible by the generosity of Jonathan Schor, an early trustee of the Columbia Land Conservancy and a much loved member of the Red Rock community.

Jon's belief in conservation led him to place conservation easements on much of his land and upon his death, to bequeath his property to the Conservancy for the establishment of this public conservation area.

“If we don’t act now, there won’t be much to talk about” – words Jon often spoke, and more importantly, put into action.  Our community will forever benefit from his deep and abiding love of the land, nature, and community.

SPECIAL THANKS

Funding for many of the trail and site improvements necessary to open this outstanding property to the public came from the Quailwood Fund of the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation and the Columbia County Soil and Water Conservation District.
