Couple Donates Stuyvesant Property for Public Access

Residents of Stuyvesant now have access to nearly 52-acres of fields and woodlands thanks to a generous donation by two town residents, Dr. and Mrs. Asbornsen. Located on Sharptown Road , and bordering the hamlet of Stuyvesant this property is within walking distance of many area residents.

The property will be open to the public and managed by the Town as a community park and public conservation area.

The park land will be available for recreation (such as hiking, bird watching, cross-country skiing, and organized team sports and games), nature study, outdoor education, community gardens, farmer’s markets, and/or for agricultural activities

The Conservation Area land will be available to the public for recreational and educational uses including, walking; hiking; bird watching; cross-country skiing; the study and enjoyment of plants, birds, and wildlife; wildlife habitat restoration and enhancement; environmental and outdoor education; nature interpretation, and other educational programs.

A conservation easement, held by CLC will ensure that the Asbornsen’s conservation and community vision will be upheld, in perpetuity.

The easement builds on an existing “Neighborhood Conservation Block”, abutting the 74-acre Gleason property, protected with a conservation easement by CLC in 2001, and is within close proximity of more than 2,000 acres that have been protected by CLC and Scenic Hudson as part of New York State’s Farmland Protection Program. The new conservation area contains open fields and meadows, hedgerows, mixed woodlands, ravines and a perennial stream that is a tributary of the Hudson River.  Click here to learn about how CLC can assist you and your town in establishing conservation areas.
